KÖRPERWELTEN Brussels, 2001

IN BRUSSELS BY POPULAR DEMAND
In 2001, more than half a million people visited The Cureghem Cellars to see KÖRPERWELTEN (BODY WORLDS).  Now, due to popular demand, KÖRPERWELTEN 4 -- the latest edition of this world renowned anatomical exhibition that premiered in Manchester in spring 2008 -- will be on display at The Cureghem Cellars.

THE SCIENCE,  THE ART, THE WONDER OF THE HUMAN BODY
In KÖRPERWELTEN 4, the exquisite form and physiology of the human body is illuminated by more than 200 new authentic human specimens that show the latest advances in plastination and dissection technology. The exhibit features original plastinates, never before seen in Brussels, including individual organs, transparent body slices, and whole bodies, transformed through the revolutionary preservation process.. See the body in disease, distress, and optimal health by comparing smokers and non-smokers lungs, healthy and cirrhosis liver, dysfunctional and robust hearts, optimal and over weight bodies.

KÖRPERWELTEN exhibitions are the only public anatomical presentations with an established Body Donation Programme.

Come to KÖRPERWELTEN 4 and encounter the mystery and beauty, the vulnerability and resilience of the awesome human body.

KÖRPERWELTEN Brussels, 2001

THE TRAILBLAZING SCIENCE OF PLASTINATION
Plastination, the groundbreaking method of halting decomposition of anatomical specimens and preserving them for medical study and health instruction, was invented and patented by anatomist and physician, Dr. Gunther von Hagens.

While a researcher and anatomist at the University of Heidelberg, Dr. von Hagens invented Plastination to improve the education of medical students and their understanding of the human body. Dr. von Hagens is a visiting professor at  New York University College of Dentistry, where he is developing the first anatomy curriculum in the United States to use plastinated specimens in lieu of dissection.

During Plastination, a gradual process that takes nearly a year, bodily fluids and soluble fats in dissected specimens are first replaced with reactive plastics, then set in dynamic, lifelike poses for optimal learning, and finally stabilized through hardening.

THE DUO BEHIND KÖRPERWELTEN
In KÖRPERWELTEN, anatomist, Gunther von Hagens and  physician, Angelina Whalley make the study of the human body—once exclusive to the medical community—accessible to everyone.

Dr. von Hagens’ groundbreaking science of Plastination, the polymer preservation of anatomical specimens, allows the human bodies in KÖRPERWELTEN to be presented in dramatic, aesthetic displays.Dr. Whalley’s medical and curatorial expertise, that meshes science and the humanities, invites contemplation, study, and reflection of the awesome human body by everyone.

The convergence of their multiple passions – his, as an anatomist, inventor, and educator; hers, as a physician, exhibition designer, and public health advocate – results in an exhibition unlike any other—one that changes forever, the way we see ourselves.
